Nothing Works: Anarchitecture After Everything

For the last decade, I have been writing a book about art practices that revel in undoing, dismantling, unmaking, disrepair, dispossession, dereliction and destitution. My book offers insight into the political lexicon of collapse and destitution by turning to the work of 1970’s artists who used collapse to comment on rapacious forms of urban renewal and who countered racism and fascism with disorder, vacancy, mechanisms of unbuilding and an investigation of the fragment. The book then turns to the aesthetic practices of contemporary queer and trans artists to see how and where this vocabulary re-emerges in our present moment of crisis.

コロンビア大学デイヴィッド・ファインソン人文学教授。著作に Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters（Duke University Press, 1995）、Female Masculinity（Duke University Press, 1998）、In A Queer Time and Place: Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives（NYU Press, 2005　、邦訳『クィアな時間と場所で——トランスジェンダーの身体とサブカルチャーの生』菅野優香、羽生有希、井上絵美子訳、花伝社）、The Queer Art of Failure（Duke University Press, 2011、邦訳『失敗のクィアアート——氾濫するアニメーション』藤本一勇訳、岩波書店）、Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal（Beacon Press, 2012）、Trans: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance（University of California Press）、最新刊はWild Things: The Disorder of Desire（Duke University Press, 2020）。2018年、Places Journal 誌より、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティ、建築環境の関係性に関する革新的な公共学術研究に授与されるアーカス／プレイス賞受賞。現在、新著Anarchitecture After Everything: A Trans Manifestoを執筆中、2026年にMIT Pressから刊行予定。2022年アダム・ペンドルトンによる短編映画『So We Moved: A Portrait of Jack Halberstam』に主演、2024年グッゲンハイム・フェローに選出。
