「日本のポピュラー文化におけるエスノグラフィー研究：音楽、アニメ、その他」

　この度、東京藝術大学大学院国際芸術創造研究科では、本研究科・開講科目「グローバル 時代の芸術文化概論」の一環で、マサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）比較メディア／ライティング研究学部の教授で、文化人類学者、メディア研究者、日本研究者のイアン・コンドリー氏を招聘します。

　講義に先立って同日6月26日(金)19:00-20:00に、毛利嘉孝（本学教授）と三原龍太郎（慶應義塾大学准教授）による事前講義が行われます。GA修士1年生はこちらも必ず出席してください。

　なお、本講義はZOOMで行われますが、GAの学生限定の受講となりますこと、ご理解ください。

概要

本講義では、フィールドワークおよびエスノグラフィー（民族誌）という方法論を用いたアプローチの多様性を描き出すために、音楽やアニメなど日本のポピュラー文化の私自身の研究について議論を行う。ヒップホップ、アニメスタジオ、アンダーグラウンドのテクノ・フェスティバルを事例に、現場で労働している人々から学んだ洞察を共有する。私の研究方法は、常に「どこにその行為があるのか」を見出すことに焦点を当ててきた。だが、これらの異なる圏域において、行為はどこにあるのだろうか？また、マルチチャンネルのイマーシヴ・サウンドという音楽制作とパフォーマンスの革新的な先端に対する最近の研究と、’Leftroman’というアーティスト名でオンラインリリースした私のファースト・アルバムについても触れてみたい。

イアン・コンドリー

文化人類学者。2002年よりマサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）教授。主著であるHip-Hop Japan: Rap And the Paths of Cultural Globalization（2006） 、The Soul of Anime: Collaborative Creativity and Japan’s Media Success Story（2013）では、共にどのように文化的ムーブメントがアンダーグラウンドからグローバル化したのかについて、探求している。コンドリーは、2006年にMITとハーバードでクールジャパンに関する共同プロジェクトを立ち上げた。Dissolve Musicというセミナーシリーズと、Shing02, Mouse on Mars、 DJ Rekha、 Victoria Shen、 The A-Beez、Ghost Grass、 Animal Hospitalといったアーティストに焦点を当てたミュージックフェスティバルを開始した。2020年、コンドリーは「Leftroman」というアーティスト名でファースト・アルバム“Hang Time Surf Electronica”を発表した。これは、今日のオンラインの音楽界をナビゲートする試みである。

また、”Hearby”というアメリカの５０以上の都市でライブミュージック・リスティングを提供するスタートアップのアプリの共同設立者、主任人類学者としても従事している。2019年秋、音楽、サウンドアート、ティーチング・モジュール、データ音響処理、障害学、フィールド・レコーディング、感覚人類学を探求するイマーシヴ・サウンドの制作のために、コミュニティ・プロダクション・スタジオとして、MITスペーシャル・サウンド・ラボを開始した。詳細はHPより:  iancondry.com

Abstract

In this talk, I will discuss my research on Japanese music, anime, and popular culture in an effort to illustrate a diversity of approaches in using fieldwork and ethnographic methods.  Drawing on examples from hip-hop night clubs, anime studios, and underground techno festivals, I will share some of the insights of learning from other people in the places they work.  My research method has always focused on trying to find “where the action is,” but where is the action in these different spheres?  I will also touch briefly on my new research into a leading edge of music production and performance, namely, multichannel, immersive sound and my experience releasing my first album online as the artist Leftroman.

Biography

Ian Condry is a cultural anthropologist and professor at MIT since 2002.  He is the author of two books, Hip-Hop Japan and The Soul of Anime, both of which explore how cultural movements go global from below.  He founded the MIT / Harvard Cool Japan Research project in 2006, and in 2016, he started Dissolve Music, a seminar series and music festival featuring artists such as Shing02, Mouse on Mars, DJ Rekha, Victoria Shen, The A-Beez, Ghost Grass, and Animal Hospital.  In 2020, he released his first album “Hang Time Surf Electronica” under the artist name Leftroman, as an experiment in navigating today’s online music worlds.  He is also co-founder and Chief Anthropologist of the app startup Hearby, which provides live music listings in over 50 cities in the US.  In the fall of 2019, he launched the MIT Spatial Sound Lab as a community production studio for immersive sound productions to explore music, sound art, teaching modules, data sonification, disability studies, field recordings and sensory ethnography.  More info:  iancondry.com
