Special Public Lecture
The State of Performance Art and Personal Narratives: The “Chain” Project and Archive

koldsleep

We are pleased to welcome koldsleep, a Korean artist collective, for a special public lecture “The State of Performance Art and Personal Narratives: ‘Chain’ Project and Archive.”

koldsleep was formed in 2020 resulting from the director Kim Mihyun’s chronic insomnia, in the Gangbuk District of Seoul, South Korea. The collective works on art projects that bring forth narratives about women and minorities, imagining a weightless space while avoiding the influence of existing forms and genres.

Using “dreams” as a theme, koldsleep has held “Two-Person Phantom Limb – Chain of Rings (二人幻脚 連鎖の輪) : Find a Channelhead” a late-night, immersive and participation-based style performance since 2021. Other works that involve audience-participation include “A Musical Instrument Novel” (2022), a compilation of the voices of 54 people; “Suspicious Happiness Operation Group” (2022), which made use of an original card game; “A Letter to Write for Yourself” (2022), a workshop where young women spoke about “happiness”; “Heterotopia” (2023), an exploration of a theater at midnight with flashlights while getting “sleep,” and more.

Through koldsleep’s artistic practice and works, this lecture will discuss art as a medium for sharing private time and experiences, the interdependent communication between audience and performer, and the ethics and dilemmas of archiving experiences with an audience. Additionally, the curatorial collective the ghost project will present “100 monogatari,” a collection of 99 stories by artists from around the world to visualize violence in social structures (Grant : The collaborative research project “Art and Gender” by Mizuho Financial Group × Center for Curatorial Studies, Tokyo Geidai) “100 kiyako,” a banquet to be held by the ghost project and koldsleep, to be held on November 1, will also be presented.

koldsleep

koldsleep is a group that produces midnight performances and art projects centered around dreams. Through performances based on minority narratives, they have created moments where participants “witness” each other. During the temporary promise of being “in performance,” the audiences create cracks in the world around them, shaping new narratives with their own bodies.

「Kold Sleep freezes dreams and insomnia and produces late-night performances. Now that you know this fact, we hope that you will help koldsleep turn the dream institute it secretly operates in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, Korea, into a “comprehensive cultural arts facility.” We are looking for “channel heads.” Perhaps you too can hear the voice of your dreams? You are never alone.」
