We are pleased to announce a special artist talk with Isaac Julien, an artist visiting Japan in conjunction with the Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka “Isaac Julien – Ten Thousand Waves” exhibition.

Isaac Julien, a graduate of St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, England, and a native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, is a British filmmaker who used video as a medium of expression for social activism and counter-discourse during the Margaret Thatcher era in the mid-1980s in England. He was one of the leaders of a movement of British filmmakers who used video as a medium for social activism and counter-discourse in the mid-1980s in Britain under Margaret Thatcher. They introduced the perspectives of the black and Asian diaspora into the British cultural debate, and were influenced by such figures as Stuart Hall, a leading figure in cultural studies and sociologist, who presented works based on themes such as race, ethnicity, postcolonialism, gender, and sexuality. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001 and won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Kunst Film Biennale in Cologne, Germany; in 2017 he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and in 2022 he was knighted. It will be remembered that his retrospective exhibition “What Freedom Is To Me” at the Tate Britain last 2023 was highly acclaimed.
We will hear from Isaac Julien, one of the world’s most remarkable artists, about what he is thinking now, his interest in creating artworks, and the role of art in society at large.
